5 Questions With Dina Selkoe

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

dina_karmaloop.jpg

Yes, 5 + 1 =6, but we just had to know a little bit more about owner/buyer Dina Selkoe of Karmaloop.

And that sick leather jacket and tee she is wearing are from MadeMe’s Fall collection. They too can be found at Karmaloop!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself?

Let’s see….. I was born in Russia (so I’m probably genetically inclined to be crazy). I have 4 pets- two cats and two dogs (Jasper, Flippy, Vivian and Mr. Serge). I like politics (double nay to Baby Bush Duvalier! Yay to Obama!), international affairs and history, tennis and traveling, collecting books and bags, and consuming wine and music (who doesn’t like the last two?), and I am about to start taking Krav Maga classes (so watch out boys of Karmaloop, you’re about to get your asses served).

2. How did you become a buyer?

I came into the company in a more general, managerial/creative type position- doing editorial stuff and the Lookbook, planning parties, opening the store in Boston, doing some legal stuff, etc., we had a buyer who did both men’s and women’s and it just made sense to separate the two, so I started doing the women’s buying about a year ago.

MUJI SOHO, the first MUJI store in the US is set to open its doors on November 16, 2007 at 12PM. Located at 455 Broadway, MUJI SOHO will open to the public from 12pm to 9pm during its first day of operation.

With approximately 3,200 square feet of retail floor space, MUJI’s first store in the US will offer over 2,000 items of MUJI products, including about 570 items of Stationery, 40 items of Furniture, 190 items of Fabric, 590 items of Housewares, 270 items of Health & Beauty products, 20 items of Outdoor supplies, 30 items of Electric Appliances and 330 items of Apparel. After the first day of opening, the store will open regularly from 11a.m. to 9p.m. from Monday to Saturday, and 11a.m. to 8p.m. on Sundays.

I have been waiting for MUJI to open in NYC for a long time, I was so excited to find out that they were going to open two locations in the US, one in SOHO and the other at The New York Times Building. But to my surprise the MUJI SOHO store came in a storm, I’m counting down the days till November 16th! I’ll be shopping there frequently, be on the lookout for tons of updates!

Comme des Garçons x KAWS

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

This makes me very happy and there are very few things, product wise, that make me happy as of late…as everything is so over-the top and over-exposed and who’s wallet can possibly keep up with all the “cool” stuff that drops so frequently? Really, there was a time when “limited” meant just that and when getting things like BAPE meant going to Japan not your corner store…”Yeah, gimme a 40 of Olde E, a pack of gum and some Bapestas, size 10″, huh? I digress, and obviously have some issues with the current state of certain hyped things, we can talk about that at some other time. Back to what makes me HAPPY!! Comme des Garçons has teamed up with legendary graffiti artist KAWS for a limited edition series of leather wallets, mens & womens t-shirts, wool bags & fragrance sets. These items will be available for sale starting Nov. 15th at Colette and Colette.fr and then from Nov. 24th at Comme des Garçons, Dover Street Market, and OriginalFake. I am doing my happy dance as I type this, YAY!

Sang A Handbags

sanga1.jpgrivertote.jpg

Ladies, remember this name because she makes some of the yummiest exotic handbags that I have ever seen! Sang A, a singer/actress turned designer, is making tons of waves with some of the most fabulous celebrities and fashion editors(hints the Style.com shoutout!), and we can definitely see why.

Her website is complete eye candy. It features the most amazing lizard, ostrich, python, and crocodile skins in practically every color under the sun. Well, the fierce colors that is! My favorite pieces are the river tote and all of the clutches. I love the geometric hardware on the river tote and the sleek modernity of the clutches.

Aren’t you glad Christmas is almost here? If you’re interested in treating yourself a little bit earlier this year, the Sang A handbag collection can be found at Neiman Marcus or you contact a sales rep at store@sanga.com.

Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory by Bond No. 9

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

andywarholsilverfactory.jpg

Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory marks the start of Bond No. 9’s series of Warhol collectibles. Depicted on the bottle’s surface is a graphic image inspired by one of the pop artist’s most recognizable images—a boldly re-colored rendition of the Campbell’s Soup Can. Soup? Perfume? Both smell sweet to us. But an Andy Warhol perfume? Well, Warhol once made mention of a company that was “interested in buying *his* aura.” Here it is, in liquid form…

  • Citrussy BERGAMOT in soft and gentle mode (as if it had a hangover)
  • Impudently zesty GRAPEFRUIT
  • Mood-altering LAVENDER
  • Non-shrinking VIOLET (Andy Warhol’s favorite scent)
  • Intoxicating INCENSE summoning up the ‘60’s with a single sniff
  • Criminally sultry JASMINE
  • Elusive, metallic IRIS, smelling the way silver might smell
  • Velvety-soft AMBER - a tranquilizer in fragrance form
  • Syrupy WOOD RESIN, hinting of a raunchy breed of vanilla
  • Cool but sensual CEDARWOOD

Like all the scents-in-progress that Bond No. 9 is designing for their Warhol repertory, this one is of ambiguous male-female gender. Available starting December 1st…a new direction in the art of perfumery and perfume bottle design. I’m a fan of Andy Warhol and like I said before I collect unique/pretty perfume bottles - this one is very very nice!

Nike Women’s Blazer

Monday, October 29th, 2007

nike_wmns_blazer.jpg

I love this sneaker! The Nike Blazer has long been a favorite of mine and when it comes equipped with such smart design as this I’m completely sold! This is definitely one for the sneaker snobs because at first glance the textures and color combinations can easily draw a WTF, but with closer examination you can see these will be giving your neutral pairs of shoes a run for their money this Fall. The Aztecan-looking weaving is gorgeous; making the black accents look almost like lace overlay. The subtle hot pink accents on the tongue are perfect and brings femininity to the shoe, which I love. Ladies, this is a must-have. Don’t miss out!

Are Your Panties Worthy?

Monday, October 29th, 2007

katemoss.jpg

As you all know, Halloween is this Wednesday, which means lots of substance-free parties, itchy polyester, and well, sluts.

Yes, this is the only occasion that seamlessly bridges the gap between the “hoe” and the “closet freak.” Allowing them both to look like a pre-jail Lil Kim (nipple pasty included) without fear of a Facebook group popping up with the intent to smear their good name.

And with that said (you have to be in a bit of a “gutta” state of mind to fully appreciate the rest of the post) , I introduce to you some of the most compelling investigative journalism since CNN’s Anderson Cooper went to cover Hurricane Katrina complete with Prada loafers and tee.

There is an article in the current issue of Missbehave called Selling Her Painties For Profit. Yasi, who has a column in the mag entitled Yasi Tries, sets out in this installment to see how many pervs she can lure on Craigslist to buy her used panties. Gross, I know.

After researching what things like this go for on the internet, she found that, “$30 is the going rate for “worn one day” and $55 for “worn during time of month.”” I’m not even going to speculate on the reason for the price hike in the more icky of the two garments because what’s more interesting is that there were actually fools who responded to Yasi’s listing!
