Won’t You Be My Vantasy?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

I have had dreams of one day owning and operating my own 70’s fantasy van. After seeing this badass piece of van-tastic machinery on a recent visit to NYC, I kinda want one even more. It was one of those super late night NYC moments, walking home solo on a hot hot NY night after just hitting up the bodega for a late night snack and there it was…like walking into a brick wall of rainbows and marshmellow (ok, I know that sounds funny a “brick” wall of…you get it, right?), like being slapped up the side of the face with the cutest and softest kitten, and then being hit over the head with a cupcake (I know this sounds crazy), there it was…Perhaps someone out there knows what’s up with this ride? Let’s us know if you know, ya know?

Female Trouble: The Camera As Mirror and Stage of Female Projection

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Cindy Sherman | Untitled #22, from the series Film Stills, Courtesy of the Artist, Metro Pictures New York and Monika Sprüth Philomene Magers Cologne, Munich, London

Over 150 photographic works are on display through October 26th in a show called Female Trouble: The Camera As Mirror and Stage of Female Projection. The featured works include pieces by Diane Arbus, Monica Bonvicini, Sophie Calle, Julia Margaret Cameron, Comtesse de Castiglione, Nan Goldin, Hannah Höch, Robert Mapplethorpe, Tracey Moffat, ringl + pit, Pipilotti Rist, Cindy Sherman, Katharina Sieverding, and many others. The selected pieces question, or challenge the view of women in society - here is how the gallery explains the exhibition:

Since the invention of photography more than 150 years ago it has been largely women who have used this technical medium to project themselves through role playing and masquerading. As well as the experimental urge to constantly create something new, the camera has also served as a means of questioning clichés of female representation. Playing with the image of the eternally feminine was and remains a discourse with gender identity, its social and political definition and what goes beyond that.

The exhibition focuses on contemporary women artists such as Cindy Sherman, Sarah Lucas, Monica Bnvicini and Pipilotti Rist, who with the aid of photography and video art examine the female image, deconstruct and redefine it. At the same time, the exhibition reaches back into the 19th and early 20th century when women such as Countess Castiglione, Lady Hawarden, Claude Cahun and Florence Henri discovered photography as a means of (self-) projection and enquiry.

This sounds like a great exhibition - I wish I were going to be in Munich to see it! I hope that the exhibit will travel to other cities, no word yet, but we’ll keep you posted.

LA: Patton & Poling’s GlassHouse-Machine Project’s at GLOW Festival

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Two of my favorite people have made magic. If you are in SoCal tomorrow night go witness it first hand. As part of the GLOW Festival, Bay Area artist’s Kamau Amu Patton and Suzy Poling have formed like Voltron to create a live musical video projection project. Here’s the scoop:

Glasshouse is a collaborative project between Kamau Patton and Suzy Poling dealing with lenticular glass, which embodies a 3-D effect. This kaleidoscope like house explores how refracting, bending and stretching light can occur with special pieces of glass by moving and manipulating the material along with turning mirrored sculptural devices and using specific light sources with optical projections. These experiments open up the edges of light and shadow, which create an unusual perception of space and spectrum. These two artists have combined geometric design, light patterns, crystals, minerals, sparks, smoke and tonal sound frequencies into one piece that they would call, Sonic Sculpture.

Nick Knight Shoots Bottega Veneta A/W 08-09 Campaign

Monday, July 14th, 2008

We’ve been following Nick Knight’s impressive work for some time now from his “White Wedding” campaign for Agent Provocateur to Nike’s “Art of Football” competition.  Knight’s most recent work includes shooting the new Autumn/Winter 2008-09 campaign for Bottega Veneta, a brand known for working with artistic photographers including Annie Leibovitz and Philip-Lorca de Corcia.  When asked how Knight was chosen as the campaign’s photographer,

Bottega Veneta’s creative director Tomas Maier chose Knight for his “sense of adventure”, explaining that: “Nick emphasises the process of creating images, which is similar to the way I approach design.”

As Nick Knight is known to do, the images are “digitally manipulated to create a striking composition that hints at a narrative” and can be see online this fall along with a short video.
