Friday, September 26th, 2008

Andrea Crews, the design collective from Paris, France, presents their Fall 08 Collection: Carnival Bauhaus. You can always expect fun and quirky designs from the Crew. Most certainly not for the shy, you are guaranteed bold colors, shapes and graphics every season and the Fall collection is just that! The collection takes on many ethnic/tribal influences mixed with silhouettes reminiscent of the 80’s and will most certainly get you noticed! Don’t be shy grrrrl, get yours and turn heads while doing it!

See more from the collection as well as some pieces that appeared in the Sept. issue of XLR8R after the jump!

The New Robin Hood

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Above has gone from arrow mobiles twirling mysteriously on electrical wires across cities around the world, to giant word-play pieces across South America.  His newest encroachment onto the public space is stenciling.  In true Above fashion, there’s more than meets the eye and a clever message is involved.  Check out his “Stealing From The Rich” piece in Lisbon, Portugal.

My Little Pony & Friends

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

IMG_5282

This year, Hasbro has been celebrating the 25th Birthday of the iconic My Little Pony brand in a myriad of ways including re-releasing some 1983 and 1984 Original Ponies. The big quarter centurial celebration culminates with “The MY LITTLE PONY Project: 25 Ponies for 25 Years” gallery exhibition, which I went to check out on Thursday, here in NYC. The Project features 18 inch ponies that have been designed by celebrities, artists, and young fans, to be auctioned off by CharityFolks.com to benefit Give Kids The World Village, a nonprofit organization that provides week-long vacations to Central Florida to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Among the included were works by artists Claw Money, Junko Mizuno, Tokidoki, Junie Moon, Catalina Estrada, Tado and Klor, and celebrities Kimora Lee Simmons, John Stamos, David and Courteney Arquette, LeAnne Rimes, Deborah Gibson, and Leah Remini. Worldwide fans from the tender age of 4 to 26, and from far and wide as Australia, Ireland and the U.S. were also chosen to get in on the action through a previously held contest.

As a young lass I wasn’t much of a fan of typical girly toys, but to be completely honest, My Little Ponies were the exception. My weakness. In fact, I recently rescued my collection of OG Ponies from my parents house so they wouldn’t wind up at the Salvation Army when I wasn’t looking! So you can imagine my pleasure to attend this event and see these magnificent works, and some of the old fillies in mint condition!

These ponies will be up for auction on Charity Folks.com until Oct. 2, with prices starting at $150 for the ponies of the contest winners, $250 for celebrities, and $500 for artists.

I spotted M.I.S.S. Crew fave Claw Money in attendance and took the opportunity to snap a flick of her with her pony.

I’ll show you two of my favorites, and we’ll take a full roll call after the jump!

I loved the precise and intricate painted and beaded works of Catalina Estrada and 10 year old contest winner Sofia de Santiago Palomares Hoffman from D.F. Mexico

Listen Lady & Gourmet Collection By Lorena Barrezueta

Friday, September 19th, 2008

A couple of months ago we were “introduced” to the work of Lorena Barrezueta. It was love at first site. Taking a material that one might associate with your grandmother’s candy dish or vase, porcelain, and bringing it to a modern and up-dated place, Battezueta, creates jewelry and tableware for the design savvy. Please believe this ain’t your Granny’s fruit bowl! All items are crafted by hand in her Brooklyn studio. Her jewelry collection, “Listen Lady“, features printed bangles and “Mannuel Communication,” all printed with 22K gold or platinum.  I am so into the tromp l’oeil studded bracelets and the watch bangles, lovingly named “Cassie” and “Rollie” . . . I can finally get the 22K Rolex I’ve been wanting! And her “Gourmet Collection” of tablewear made from molds of disposable take-out containers, genius . . . um, I’m no where near getting married but at least I know what to register for my tableware!

See Rollie, Cassie and much more after the jump!

INSA Presents: INSA Heels. HOT, HOT, HEAT!

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

How many times have you wished and prayed for this day? Every time we saw a pair of INSA’s customized high heels we cooed and swooned over them just wishing we could slip our danty foot inside…if only for a moment. And now we can! Today INSA dropped his INSA Heels in 3 styles: Chelsea (Gold/Blk), Hackney (Pink/Blk/Wht), and Lewisham (HotPink/Blk/Wht). Available at INSA-Heels.com and in sizes US 5-10, they can be yours for £200 (conversion chart available here). All leather and all day sexy, that’s about a 3.5-4″ heel I’m thinking…might be best for sitting, or errrr…you fill in the blank. Don’t let these pass you by…

See more, read more after the jump!

INSA’s world is one where fetishism, desire and graffiti collide; through extensive street level work and fine art INSA has taken the iconic high heel image and made it his own, infusing a simple, yet clever, graphic ‘logo’ with meaning and relevance. High heels represent a myriad of different things to different people; sex, money, fashion, the battle between masculine and feminine sexuality, dominant and submissive, consumerism and object fetishism; all of which are themes actively explored in INSA’s work. Heels themselves are often, of course, objects of desire and objets d’art in their own right.

The fantasy of ‘INSA HEELS’ is now a reality…

Check out all the color ways and more pics after the jump!

Mysterious Al’s “Pisstake Marilyn (Goth)” Prints Available Now!

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

The oh, so Mysterious Al has released 4 limited edition prints called Pisstake Marilyn (Goth). Mysterious Al’s screen prints seem inspired by the color blocked screen prints that Andy Warhol did of Marilyn, but Al has added his trademark droopy eyes and gnarling mouth to give it the unmistakable Mysterious Al touch.  Each of the prints are printed on 100% French Arches paper and each color is limited to an edition of 25.  I feel like if I get one, I need all four to make the set complete!  You can purchase them at his online store here.  Act fast before they’re all gone!
