M.I.S.S. Jet Set: Samsonite Black Label & Alexander McQueen Silver Edition

Monday, May 12th, 2008

samsonite black label silver

Samsonite Black Label and Alexander McQueen joined forces a while back to create a limited-edition collection of luggage.  The pieces were incredible and featured black and white suitcases with either an enlarged croc-like pattern embossed on the leather or a faux-spinal column protruding from the front - very avant garde (or scary)!  The collaboration was such a success that the pair are releasing a silver luggage collection for Fall.  ”Created with Bayer, one of the world’s largest producers of polymers and high-performance plastics, the bags’ shiny silver coating feature a special UV resistant mirror paint that won’t crack or scratch. ”  The luggage will be available for sale beginning in September and retails from $800 to $2500.  With that price tag, it’s truly for the “jet set.”

M.I.S.S. Jet Set: Body Jewelry and Flying

Friday, April 18th, 2008

So you just got the cutest new belly ring. Or maybe you’ve had other more private areas pierced. Whether you just had your piercing done or have had it for years, the metal jewelry you take for granted in your day to day comings and goings could be a security hassle at the airport.

Up until now, proper TSA procedure would require that you remove any jewelry that sets off the metal detectors, probably resulting in you having to get back in line and go through security again. This can be a real bugger if your body jewelry is not meant to come out easily; you could risk damaging yourself or your expensive body jewelry if you’re in a rush to get back through the security lines and off to your flight.

Very recently, TSA has changed its procedure to allow passengers to request a visual inspection instead of removing the jewelry, but hey! Who wants some security agent poking and prodding your piercings, right? Here are a few ideas to help you avoid this embarrassing scene at the airport:

1.  Take your jewelry out before you get to security. Unless the piercing is brand new, it should be fine for most piercings to take out the jewelry for an hour or so while you check in and get through security. Place it in a clean contact lens case, cover with sterile saline, and pack it in your quart-sized liquids bag to present to security. When you’re through security, find a bathroom and replace the jewelry. No harm, no foul.

2.  Make sure you wear body jewelry that is easy to get on and off. If you fly a lot, you definitely need to make sure that you can remove your body jewelry yourself. If you need to have a piercer remove it, you probably shouldn’t wear it while flying.

3.  Carry extra components. If you wear rings with capture beads or removable segments, have an extra bead or segment or two in your bag in case one does a runner while you’re taking off or putting in your jewelry. If you wear jewelry with external thread closures, or with internal thread closures…well, same thing. Have an extra closure or two available in case you lose one.

4.  Try wearing jewelry with plastic or acrylic posts. There are tons of bars and rings available now in plastic and acrylic, materials which won’t set off the security devices at the airport. Consider investing in a few pieces for travel. Just make sure you don’t have allergies to the plastic or acrylic. Some jewelry styles even come in wood or other organic materials. You might just find them more comfortable than metal!

5.  Consider a retainer for travel. Retainers aren’t just for facial piercings anymore. Consider wearing a plain retainer for travel.

6.  The one type of body jewelry you should NEVER wear while traveling? Seamless rings. These require pliers to put on or take off, so traveling with them is totally inconvenient and potentially dangerous.

Whatever type of body jewelry you choose - from earrings to nose rings to nipple rings and beyond - just make sure you understand the potential for air travel security delays and then adjust your jewelry accordingly.

Happy Travels!

M.I.S.S. Jet Set: Little Things Can Trip You Up

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Traveling should be an easy thing, right? You hop a jet from LA to New York and boom! A few hours later, you’re down in SoHo having a drink with your best friend from college.Everything’s good … until suddenly, everything isn’t.

To help keep your air travel surprises to a minimum, here are a few things you should know.

(1) There are rumors some airlines are thinking of adopting a “one carry-on bag only” policy, meaning just that: only one carry-on bag. This means that soon, that purse you’re carrying may be considered your carry-on bag, period. Before every air travel experience, go to your airline’s website and make sure you know how many bags you’re allowed. It may save you some surprises at the airport.

(2) You may not “willfully separate” from your checked luggage. If you DO check a bag and your flight is cancelled or rescheduled, you may NOT under federal law make your own arrangements, skip your rescheduled flight and pick up your luggage arbitrarily. Here’s an example: Say you’re flying X Airline and have a layover in Atlanta. You checked one piece of luggage at your point of origin. Your connecting flight leaving Atlanta is cancelled, and X Airline books you on their first flight out the next day. You can NOT book an earlier flight on Y Airline, and just claim your luggage later at your destination point. This would constitute a “willful separation” from your luggage, and is illegal. Yet another reason you should try to do the carry-on bag thing!

(3) If your flight is cancelled due to weather or other natural occurences and you cannot fly out until the next day, your airline is not obligated to pay for your overnight accommodations. Many travelers don’t know this, and pitch a real hissy at the counter people when it happens, threatening to take their business to another airline. Some airlines, though very few, will cover the cost of overnight accommodations for their preferred travelers. For the rest of us Coach Class lackies, though, most airlines will offer a discount slip with several names and numbers of hotels that can put you up for the night for an “under the counter” discounted rate. Just calm down, pick a hotel, call, get your confirmation number, and eat the room cost. Airlines can’t do anything about the weather, folks.

(4) It is usually quicker to get results by calling the airline directly to rearrange a flight than waiting in line at the airport for a ticket agent. This goes without saying, really, but every time I fly, I see people who are unprepared for delays and/or reschedules, and end up frustrated and angry waiting in line to talk to a “real person.” This could be eliminated entirely by simply programming in the toll-free number for your airline into your cell phone before you leave on a trip. Something happens to delay you or you need to rearrange flights, all you do is pick up your phone and call. There are a lot more “real people” available by phone than at your departure gate.

(5) If you DO have to work with a ticket agent one on one in the airport, courtesy can get you everywhere. Know your airline’s policies and regulations, and then be very very nice to the people who can help you. Who do you think gets better service, the person screaming at the ticket agent or the person politely and patiently speaking to the agent? Particularly in a hectic situation where an agent is rearranging dozens of flights, using the good manners your parents taught you can really help diffuse an already tense situation, and who knows? You might get a Business Class seat for your courtesy.

Happy travels, all!

M.I.S.S. Jet Set: Wi-Fi in the Sky. Jet Blue’s Beta Blue.

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

I had heard about JetBlue’s Beta Blue aircraft last month while flying out to NYC. Only one plane, called the BetaBlue aircraft, has the Wi-Fi capabilities to access the Internet in the sky. Can you imagine how much work or web-surfing you could get done cruising 10,000 feet in the sky!! On my most recent trip to NY I had the chance to fly on the BetaBlue plane and use the service. It was great to knock out a few emails before I fell asleep. This is a free service provided by JetBlue and LiveTV™, Yahoo!®, and BlackBerry®. JetBlue is the first domestic airline to offer this kind of connectivity to its customers, free of charge.

M.I.S.S. Jet Set: The Grab-And-Go Kit

The Grab-And-Go Kit
(or, the essentials you should always have packed in your carry on)

Ladies who travel often know that it can be a real pain to pack, unpack, repack, rinse and repeat every time they have to hop a plane for work (or a quick weekend sanity getaway). It can really eat up your time.

You can avoid some of that wasted time, though, by preparing and keeping current a “Grab-And-Go” kit for your carry on bag. When you use something from the kit, just replace it as soon as you return from your trip and your “necessaries” will always be ready to go.
