Princesas Market Opens: Miss Van’s Official Online Shop!!

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

miss van
One of my favorite artists is Miss Van. The girls she paints are so iconic that she’s been copied many, many times. The themes and settings that her ladies are painted in change with each series, but her girls always have the haunted, mysterious expressions that captivate me. Lucky for us, now we can all get a little piece of the Miss Van world. I’m excited to announce that Miss Van has recently opened her own online shop, Princesas Market, where you can purchase postcards, prints, books and jewelry. The postcards and prints feature works from previous exhibitions Princesas, Bestial and Atame. The book is her first catalogue printed for one of her latest exhibitions, Atame, and is limited to 1000 numbered copies. The most exciting items I saw on the site were jewelry pieces that made by Katrin Bauer. The ladies chose “la biche” character as the main subject for the project and all of the pieces are sterling silver. I’m so happy that there’s finally a place online to get Miss Van stuff and it’s so hard to choose, I want it all!

Pink Worlds: New Art By Fawn Gehweiler & Dana Carlson

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

pink worlds
M.I.S.S. Crew’s very own Fawn Gehweiler is exhibiting some of her recent works at a new show entitled Pink Worlds, opening this Friday at Aftermodern Fine Art Gallery in San Francisco. Here’s how she explains the show:

Taking a cue from the show’s namesake “Pink Worlds and White Icing”, a collection of poems written by a 12 year old girl in late 60s, artists Dana Carlson and Fawn Gehweiler each present a collection of recent works that take a turn for the pastoral, pop and pretty, albeit with a dash of dark comedy thrown in for good measure. Awash in preteen nostalgia, strangely baroque and alternately naive, precocious, and deeply introspective, these tiny poems about “color, the Beatles, bubblegum, nature, and the universe” lend both a perfect title and a perfect backdrop to their respective candy colored dreamscapes and imaginary narratives of head-in-the-clouds teenage psychedelia.

Fawn is one of our favorite artists and if her work looks familiar it’s either because you’ve seen a Screaming Mimi’s ad or you saw one of our older M.I.S.S. Crew covers.

Alter Egos

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Danyale, photo by Derek Blanks

There’s nothing wrong with having an alter ego (*wink, ahem). Superheroes got ‘em so they could save people and not be hassled at the grocery store the next day. Rappers have them if they aren’t lucky enough to rock the mic with their God-given name. And you can imagine how quick us girls can whip one up when some uninvited fella wants to give our cellies a ring.

Atlanta-based photographer Derek Blanks has an interesting photo series up that blurs the fine line between extra and ordinary. More photos after the jump…
