Missed out on the show? No problem: the footage is up on YouTube, with EyeASage rocking her all-womyn crew, DJ Cellskiii and Irie Eyez. Check out flicks of resident rocka, Hopie Spitshard, after the jump!
This Saturday—July 12th—the world famous WEFUNK radio show (Montreal) will be making their first West Coast appearance (ever in their 12 year run!!!) at the Elbo Room in San Francisco and I am so proud to say that I worked on the above flyer (toot! toot!)…Yep! When I’m not posting about Free Slurpees (yea, who loves you?!) on M.I.S.S. Crew, I, M.I.S.S. Lady Lexx, do my thing as a graphic designer while listening to funk music…and in my humble little world, this is the stuff dreams are made of…
Check the details after the jump and I hope to see you funk-lovin’ ladies there!
San Francisco native Hopie Spitshard is gearing up for her debut solo album release, Diamond Dame, next Tuesday, July 8th. Tune in next Tuesday for an interview and an exclusive free download and hear it from the Diamond Dame herself . . .
I’m the resident WP reader/fiend (as opposed to WWD), so I had to share my excitement on this new musical experience, that is Wax Poetics Digital! The site has thousands of new releases and vital reissues available for download now! The tracks for sale, in digital format, will interest all Wax Poetics readers, as the stock spans Brazillian to breaks, Latin to lounge, and of course, plenty of classic and unearthed jazz, funk, soul, and hip-hop (aaawwww yeaaaaah!).
Also, be sure to head out and celebrate the official launch of Wax Poetics Digital with two of my personal favorites, The Budos Band and the charming and talented, DJ Amir. Check the details:
Tracks from Wax Poetics Digital have been hand selected by the Wax Poetics Staff and are ready to be played tonight on the Record Rundown. The Wax Poetics Record Rundown broadcasts every Thursday from 10pm to Midnight on East Village Radio.
Are you guys watching Ms. Rap Supreme on VH1? Whether you’re digging it or not, I’m sure it’s got you all nostalgic for some hot tracks by the femcees of yesteryear. Well, thanks to Ego Trippin’ former XXL Editor-In-Chief Elliot Wilson, and a handful of bloggers, every Monday brings us a Hardbody Female Spit compilation of the best, hardest, most celebrated and slept on tracks from the days of yore. Refamiliarize yourself with tracks from your celebrated faves like Salt-N-Pepa, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, Trina, Jean Grae, Bahamadia and MC Lyte, and in addition open your ears to Amil (can I get a what what??) Roz (Redman had a sister that rhymed? Sign me up!), Heather B (remember her from The Real World?), Sweet Tee, and the rest of the bunch that you may have never heard of.
Yessss! *double arm pump!* L.Marauder did us all a favor and dropped a Four Volume MP3 Download of Female Rappers by at OhWord.com! She brings everyone from the usual suspects (MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill) to the not-so usual suspects (Mystic, Jean Grae, Bahamadia) to the “not-familiar-with-the-name” suspects (Njeri Earth, Apani B-Fly Emcee, and Ces aka Mos Def’s younger sister).
Yes of course fashion and beauty are exciting, but one of my other favorite pastimes is discovering GOOD new music, and the following two bands, Hottub and Chow Nasty are fo sho, Ah ma Gawd worthy. Visit Hottub’s Myspace page:http://www.myspace.com/hottub94608 Shows in California from Feb. – May 2008
The ladies of Hottub with their cheeky femme-bot rhymes are hardcore rapping machines and Chow Nasty’s indietronic funk is just crazy, quirky, fun. Both bands are San Francisco East Bay natives, and both are guilty of marrying funny, clever lyrics to righteous good beats, and have a hell of a lot of flair. So listen up folks, if you like to get your dance on, gather up your posse and check them out ASAP!!
Ah ma gawd, so fresh, it’s raw….

Can I see a show of hands from the ladies who love hip-hop? I’m sure that most of you already know that female emcees finally started to make a bit of a comeback on the hip-hop scene in 2007 (seriously, what took so long?!?) Well, last week the New York Times published an article featuring this seemingly triumphant visibility and return to the forefront of the scene with big talents and underground faves Yo Majesty, Amanda Blank, Santogold, The Lady Tigra, and Kid Sister. Mainstream successes Missy Elliott and Eve should also be dropping new cd’s this year, so we can only hope that 2008 proves to be a blockbuster year for the ladies in hip-hop. It’s been a long time coming and I have my “Ladies Is Pimps Too” itunes playlist fired up, and ready for some new additions. Who else are you feeling?

CONART was everywhere in Hip Hop culture when I was growing up…My favorite emcees sported the gear in their videos. My dude-friends rocked it. It was in the graff magazines I picked up…everywhere! But then, much like Britney Spears’ mind, it was gone.
After a long hiatus, the brand is back and entering premium retailers around the US right now! Their first series of men’s tees just dropped and soon they’ll be releasing girl tees and accessories! The t-shirt above features the work of legendary graffiti artist CHAZ, of Los Angeles ‘Cholo Style’ Graffiti art fame.
We’ll definitely keep you posted when these tees officially drop but for now read up on the brand’s history below:
“When CONART entered the marketplace there was no street wear market, no hip-hop stores, no cool-guy blogs. CONART is the originator of the “street wear” movement. Established in 1989, CONART Clothing Brand has established itself as the first label to use raw designs by the top graffiti artists in the world. Hip-hop artists such as The Notorious B.I.G., ODB, Method Man, Red Man, The Pharcyde, Gangstarr and many others have all rocked CONART in movies, videos and advertisements. CONART has always been considered one of the realest players in the game. True to the art. The time has come for the originator to show the world that it is still all about the art.”
