Coty Research & Development Facility: An Inside Look!

Monday, August 25th, 2008

When I think of Coty, I think of the array of fragrances that the company produces: From Marc Jacobs and Chloe, to Exclamation! and Kate Moss, Coty is the world’s largest fragrance company and a recognized leader in global beauty. A month ago, we were invited to a media event at Coty’s Research & Development facility in New Jersey. Though flattered and extremely excited to get an inside peek into the beauty giant, none of the M.I.S.S. writers could attend. No fear! We arranged to have some photos sent to us so that you could at least get a sense of what’s it’s like on the inside of the beauty game.

It’s not all glamour, in fact, it’s all science based so think lab coats and test tubes! Chief Scientific Officer & SVP of Global R&D, Ralph Macchio (not the Karate Kid!), let the tour and explained business behind the beauty company. He explained the product development cycle of testing, smelling, comparing and evaluating all that goes into the development of Coty’s color, fragrance and skin care business. The guests even got to use machines that tested eye lash durability and skin hydration. Exciting!

If I Was A Rich Girl . . .

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

I would have a new pair of stilettos for every night out, from feather drenched or patent leather Louboutin’s to camouflage or zebra print Manolo Blahnik’s. These are the kind of shoes you build outfits around.
louboutin blahnik
Oh, and bags! I never have enough, no matter how many I gather I always find more that I need. Each bag holds it’s own special place in my heart. My favorite styles are usually day totes and clutches - the ones pictured below would be an awesome edition to my ensemble any day of the week.

M.I.A. Launches Clothing Line

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

MIA
M.I.A. is already a style icon with her unique mix of vintage/ethinic/street pieces. Her selection as the face of the Marc by Marc Jacobs spring 2008 ad campaign sealed the deal. M.I.A. is taking her status to new heights with the release of her own line called - you guessed it - M.I.A. The collection includes bomber jackets, t-shirts and leggings in bright colors and bold prints - very much the look that M.I.A. is famous for sporting. No word yet on when or where to find it but we’ll keep you posted. If her clothing is nearly as good as her music, she’ll have fans here!

Fancy Footwork: Designer Jellies!

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Jelly shoes have sure come a long way since the 80’s! Thanks to original Brazilian jelly brands Melissa and Alexandre Herchcovitch , the jelly has gone through many transformations and has become its own category in footwear.

This year luxury designers are hopping on the jelly trend and are not disappointing! Earlier this month I reported about the F08 collabo between Melissa X Vivienne Westwood. Muito quente! If your jonesing for some designer jelly shoes now, no need to fret because some of our favorite brands are offering up their own version of the jelly this spring.

Top Right: Gucci, $150, Top Left: Givenchy, $165, Bottom Right: Fendi, $175, Bottom Left: Marc Jacobs, $160

And remember, aside from being super cute and affordable, jellies are waterproof and vegan friendly!

Marc Jacobs F/W ‘08

marc1.jpgmarc-2.jpg

Guess who presented on time Friday night?

None other than Marc “I’ll be two hours late” Jacobs! Actually, he started seventeen minutes late, but it was only to give people enough time to make it to their seats. Plus, that was like five minutes early in the fashion world. That’s probably why Rachel Zoe was refused entrance. But more on that later…

The front row was filled with tons of celebrity “Dos,” “Donts,” and “WTFs”.

For the record: Marc campaign champions Victoria Beckham and M.I.A. were the “Dos” ( Love, love them!), Selma Blair’s haircut was the “Don’t” (Christina Ricci barely pulled it off), and well… you can guess what Kevin Federline was. (Really Marc? Front Row?)

Anyways, the show took place at the uber-exclusive Regiment Armory ( hints the bribery scandal) and Sonic Youth provided the rock ambiance for Marc’s Paurl Revere collection. The collection was full of muted pastels, casual, and not sexy. No, not sexy at all. Unlike last years overtly sexy lingerie pieces.

It was smart and very original. Beautiful? I don’t know.

On a side note: Abbey Lee did Big and little Marc this week; along with Calvin Klein, Anna Sui, Alexander Wang, Erin Fetherston, Lacoste, Jonathan Saunders, and lots, lots more.

Are you tired yet?

So, ANTM Is Producing Top Models?

Monday, February 11th, 2008

alice.jpg00050m.jpg

Over the past few years, I’ve been so caught up in the campy deliciousness that is Tyra Bank’s America’s Next Top Model that I’ve never been able to catch any of the foreign reincarnations of the show.

I mean, what’s ANTM without Tyra’s pointless “Tyraisms.”

Anyways, I’m slightly regretting missing out on the episodes from “down under” because Australia’s winner Alice Burdeu actually has the idustry buzzing - but in a good way.

The knock-out red head made her prescense known at Proenza Scouler last week - causing the people at Marc Jacobs to take notice.

Like Saleisha, Alice is also signed to Elite NY. Can we give a boom-kat to the agents at Elite for all the MA-jor talent they have been scouting? (Karlie Kloss, Ali Stephens, Coco Rocha) IMG and Women/Supreme better watch out.

With Alice’s success in the NY market, it will be interesting to see how this will translate in terms of those key bookings in Milan and Paris.

In the meantime, Tyra’s tenth cycle on ANTM starts next Wednesday. Get excited…

The Jokes On You

Friday, January 11th, 2008

marc-jacobs-ss08-victoria-beckham.jpg

“Maybe he isn’t that crazy after all?”

Was my initial thought after seeing the first ad for the Marc Jacobs Collection. It features Victoria Beckham’s super-tanned legs wearing a pair of funky day-glo heels that are hanging over of a Marc Jacobs shopping bag. Yes, you heard correctly; Mrs. Beckham’s trademark haircut and pout were no where to be found.

Brilliant, no? The hotly contested, detested, sometimes loved, but overwhelmingly hated thought of Victoria being in Marc’s spring ads made the designer refocus his campaign. According to WWD:

“There was a lot of discussion about Victoria being in our ads and tons of blogs on the Internet about ‘Should she or shouldn’t she?,’ ‘What’s going on with Marc Jacobs?,’ and ‘Has he lost his mind?’,” Jacobs explained. “We thought the funniest thing would be to show the Victoria Beckham ads that don’t show Victoria Beckham, but just to see those legs coming out of the bag.”

The pairing couldn’t be more genius and hilarious. This really shouldn’t have come as a surprise considering the ass-backwards (literally) spring ‘08 runway collection. Beckham is the anti-Marc girl - very glamorous and over-the-top. The complete opposite of hist past indie/quirky muses like Sophia Coppola and Meg White.

However, what’s most shocking is this:

Marc Jacobs actually reads blogs? And if so, should we be looking for a shout in the near future? See, we have jokes too…

Mr. Blackwell Gives Britany Spears Fuc*ed-Up Roots a Pass

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

mr-blackwell-2008.jpg

As much as Marc Jacobs and Elle magazine might love Mrs. Beckham - Mr. Blackwell isn’t worshiping at the alter this is Posh spice, and doesn’t plan on it anytime soon.

Yesterday, he released his infamous list scrutinizing the misguided fashion decisions made by some of the world’s biggest entertainers. This year, the victims include: Kelly Clarkson, Eva Green, Avril Lavigne, Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan and Alison Arngrim, Fergie, Mary-Kate Olsen.

But David Beckham’s babies mama grabs top honors this year. On Victoria, Mr. Blackwell says:

“Forget the fashion spice, wearing a skirt would suffice! In one skinny-mini monstrosity after another, pouty Posh can really wreck-em.”

Ironically, a very troubled Brit Brit was spared:

“I felt that it was inappropriate at this time to make comment, when her personal life is in such upheaval. I hope 2008 is a better year for her,” Blackwell said.

Dr. Phil are you listening? Oh yeah, we’re not that type of blog.
