Alter Egos

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Danyale, photo by Derek Blanks

There’s nothing wrong with having an alter ego (*wink, ahem). Superheroes got ‘em so they could save people and not be hassled at the grocery store the next day. Rappers have them if they aren’t lucky enough to rock the mic with their God-given name. And you can imagine how quick us girls can whip one up when some uninvited fella wants to give our cellies a ring.

Atlanta-based photographer Derek Blanks has an interesting photo series up that blurs the fine line between extra and ordinary. More photos after the jump…

Art HERstory: Isabel Muñoz

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

I’ve been very fortunate to work with talented and down-to-earth female photographers such as Amanda Lopez (Mama Clothing photo shoots) and Nina Parks (Married to the Hustle album cover) and the way these ladies are able to capture the feeling and raw beauty of a culture is simply awing.

As a graphic designer, it’s very important for me to work with someone who can interpret the world I’m not able to immediately capture through my art. Working with these ladies has inspired finished products that leave me filled with gratitude and satisfaction.

Today’s post is on Isabel Muñoz, who is one of the most important and exciting figures in photography today but I can honestly say that I see Amanda Lopez and Nina Parks both being introduced in that same way, in the near future. Read on…

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

Hey ladies!! Amanda Lopez , MISS member and former Mama intern, is a photographer extraordinaire that is down in LA working with THE Estevan Oriol and she let me in on a new project . . . .

Upper Playground is putting together a show with Estevan Oriol and Yasumasa Yonehara. Yonehara is well known for his seductive images of Japanese models and Oriol is known for his shots of lovely Latinas. The concept behind the project is that the photographers will switch their subject matter. So, Estevan is searching for Japanese girls in SF to photograph the first week of April and Yone is looking for Latinas…

This is your chance to be a supa-model and be shot by some of the most talented photographers out there right now! If you fit the bill and are interested please send a picture and your contact info to yone_estevan@yahoo.com. Models must be 18+ and able to shoot the first week of April. The show is on the 5th of April. Best of Luck!!
